Therapy for Medical Trauma
Many people with chronic pain or chronic illness have had medical experiences (conditions, procedures, hospitalizations, surgeries, etc.) that were painful, emotionally difficult, frightening, or life-threatening. Negative interactions or the repetition of being in hospitals and medical appointments can be their own form of trauma. Even long after these events occur, you may be left with strong emotions, repetitive thoughts, a diminished sense of safety, and fear or avoidance of further medical care. Symptoms of medical trauma can look like the following:
Fear of doctors or hospitals
Avoiding medical care
Dread before appointments
Recurring unpleasant memories
Feeling on guard
Difficulty trusting providers
Feeling unsafe in medical settings
Strong emotional reactions to bodily sensations
Difficulty undergoing procedures
I help patients process these experiences, reduce fear, and restore a sense of safety and confidence.
