I am not in-network with any insurance companies and am considered an “out-of-network” provider. This means that the full fee is due at the time of the session, and I will provide you with a “superbill” (an invoice for the appointment) which you may submit to your insurance company to request reimbursement.
Please note that out-of-network benefits differ significantly across insurance companies and plans. Many insurance companies offer partial but not full reimbursement (and some do not reimburse out-of-network services at all), so it is a good idea to check with your insurance company about their policies for reimbursing out-of-network therapy. I do not directly interface with insurance companies.
Please visit the “Rates” tab to learn more about how to use your out-of-network benefits.

The first appointment (intake) is $270. After this, individual therapy appointments are $220. Fees are paid in full at the time of the appointment.
-
As part of your intake paperwork, you will enter your credit card information. At the time of your appointment, your credit card will be charged the session fee.

I provide individual, virtual therapy only (no couples or family therapy, although you are welcome to have a family member occasionally attend an appointment).
My practice best serves those who can benefit from weekly outpatient therapy. I do not provide crisis or between-session services. If you regularly experience suicidal ideation or other difficulties that require contact with a therapist more frequently or outside normal business hours, a different level of care or practice may be more appropriate for you.

I am currently taking new patients and having immediate (within the next 1-2 weeks) openings.
This section will be regularly updated to reflect this information.

I am licensed and reside in Tennessee (Eastern Standard Time). I see patients virtually (telehealth) only. I provide care to patients throughout Tennessee as well as all PSYPACT states (PSYPACT is an interstate agreement that allows psychologists to practice telehealth across state lines; most states are included in PSYPACT with a few exceptions). I regularly treat patients throughout the United States.
I am able to provide services if you are located in any of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming – as well as the Northern Mariana Islands and Washington, DC.

Roan Psychology is an independent private practice. Your care is provided directly by one psychologist through telehealth (rather than an app, therapy platform, or a large network of providers). Here, there is an emphasis on individualized treatment, privacy, confidentiality, and protecting your personal health information - not treating your information as a product. At Roan Psychology, your information will never be sold or used for advertising. I intentionally use an electronic health record that does not sell client data, does not use data for AI training, and is not owned by a venture capital (VC) company.
-
I do not use AI to conduct therapy sessions, transcribe sessions, generate psychotherapy notes, make diagnostic or clinical treatment decisions, or process your protected health information. Your treatment is provided directly by me using my professional training, clinical judgment, and the information you share during our sessions. In addition, therapy sessions are not audio or video recorded (unless you explicitly provide written permission in advance under very specific circumstances), and I do not use AI transcription, ambient listening technology, or "therapy assistant" software.

I am located in Eastern Standard Time, and I see patients who are located in any time zone.

All you need is an internet connection and a device (phone, computer, tablet, etc) with a camera. I will send you an email and/or text message with a link to join each session directly from your device. You simply click the link and join the video session. The link and telehealth platform (Zoom) are private, secure, and HIPAA-compliant. Sessions are not recorded in any way. I have extensive experience conducting therapy through telehealth and have found it to be just as effective as in-person therapy in most cases. I am also well-practiced in addressing problems that may occasionally arise during virtual sessions (e.g., disruptions in connection, technology issues, etc). If I do not believe virtual therapy would be an appropriate fit for you, I will be clear about this with you.
If you have any hesitations about virtual therapy, I would encourage you to try it for 1-2 sessions and then decide if it feels right for you.

In addition to my areas of specialty, I treat a wide variety of mental health problems. Please feel free to inquire if you have questions about this and whether I may be able to help you.
I do not directly treat clinically diagnosed OCD, eating disorders, autism spectrum disorders, active psychosis, substance use disorders, dementia, or suicidality as primary presenting concerns. However, it may be possible to engage in treatment with me and still have some of these issues (I am happy to further discuss this with you).

For those local to my area, you know The Roan (rhymes with “phone”) well. For those not local, my practice is named after Roan Mountain, a beautiful, prominent mountain in Tennessee that can be reached by way of the famous Appalachian Trail. It’s one of my favorite places. Hiking it takes a lot of persistence and patience. It’s almost all uphill. Sometimes it’s easier; other times an unexpected storm rolls in and derails you. But once at the top, the world opens up and you can see clearly. You feel proud, accomplished, lighter, calm, and peaceful. Resilient. Strong (stronger than you thought you were). You’re glad you didn’t give up. All the effort was worth it. That’s what I hope therapy will feel like to you.

Few psychologists understand the complexities of chronic pain and chronic illness and how to treat these conditions. I have advanced training and many years of experience spent immersed in these areas and embedded in medical teams, and I tailor treatment to the unique needs of each patient. I also have lived experience in most of the areas I address in my practice, making me uniquely qualified to understand these issues.
I intentionally keep the number of patients on my caseload at a manageable level, so that you get more individualized attention. This allows me more time to be thoughtful about your situation and treatment planning, so that you are getting high-quality care.

Intake: Your first step will be to complete some standard paperwork online and then attend a 60-minute intake appointment, the purpose of which is to get to know you and your presenting problems better, discuss your goals for therapy, and begin developing a treatment plan that is tailored to you. The intake session will help solidify if we are a good fit and if you are likely to benefit from my services.
Session frequency: I strongly recommend beginning with weekly therapy sessions. A regular time that we agree on will be reserved and held for you each week. Consistent attendance is extremely important for the best chances of making progress. This consistency allows me to get to know you and what types of interventions may best fit you, and it allows us time to develop a good working relationship in which you feel safe and understood. It also allows for time to try out new strategies, assess how things are working, and make adjustments as needed.
Number of sessions: This varies significantly from person to person and is dependent on a variety of factors (presenting problem, history, severity of problem, type of treatment, etc). We will begin to determine this at intake, and this will be an ongoing conversation as we assess your progress throughout therapy. I do not believe in or sell the idea of “quick fixes” in therapy in most cases. Change is a process that takes time. It is realistic to expect that it may take a few sessions to see progress in therapy.

45 minutes. Occasionally, a longer session time may be needed, which we will discuss in advance.
-
Not currently, but I value the role of somatic, “bottom-up” approaches and frequently incorporate these into treatment.
-
As a psychologist, I provide psychotherapy and am unable to prescribe medication. This is usually done by a medical provider such as a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner. I am happy to collaborate with your medical provider as needed.

Absolutely! One of my core personal and clinical values is respect for and acceptance of all people. Therefore, I encourage and welcome patients from all backgrounds, gender identities, ideologies, religious beliefs or non-beliefs, sexual orientations, nationalities, cultures, races, ethnicities, and lifestyle choices. Therapy with me is a safe place to express your true self, and I believe it is critical for any effective therapist to respect and support all aspects of a patient’s identity. I enjoy learning about and engaging with backgrounds, identities, and customs that are different from my own.

Monday through Thursday during regular daytime hours (mornings and afternoons). I do not have Friday, evening, or weekend hours.
